Man Lā Yaḥḍuruh al-Faqīh is a foundational Shi'a hadith collection focused on Islamic jurisprudence, compiled by the prominent scholar al-Shaykh al-Saduq. It is one of the Four Books of Shi'a Hadith and is regarded as highly reliable.
The book’s full title, Kitab man la yahduruh al-faqih, means “The book for the one who does not have a jurist before him.”
In the introduction, al-Saduq explains that while in Ilaq (near Balkh), a friend requested a practical book on Islamic law, similar in concept to Kitab man la yahduruhu al-Tabib ("The book for the one who does not have a doctor") by Muhammad b. Zakariyya al-Razi. This inspired al-Saduq to compile a concise yet comprehensive guide to lawful and unlawful matters for ordinary Shi'a Muslims.
Al-Saduq states that he included only hadiths he considered authentic and reliable—those he personally used for issuing legal rulings (fatwas). Unlike later jurists who added their analysis, he has simply presented hadiths relevant to each topic. This makes the book a curated and practical reference rather than a comprehensive compilation.
To keep the book accessible, al-Saduq omitted the chains of transmission (Isnads), explaining that this was to avoid making it overly lengthy. However, scholars can consult his other works for the full Isnads.
Overall, Man Lā Yaḥḍuruh al-Faqīh serves as a concise, trustworthy guide to Shi'a legal teachings, designed for everyday use by believers who may not have access to a jurist.
